Laura Bald has been a member of the Stamford Symphony since 1984. She earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School where she studied with Joseph Fuchs and Hamao Fujiwara. She has performed with numerous orchestras including the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Amici New York, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the American Symphony, the Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and the Discovery Orchestra. She also performs at the OK Mozart Festival. Recently, she served as guest concertmaster and soloist with the Connecticut Grand Opera. An avid chamber musician, Laura was a founding member of the Victoria String Quartet while living in Hong Kong. In addition to making several tours of China, the quartet was a vital part of Hong Kong musical life with performances at venues throughout the territory and frequent live radio broadcasts. Recipients of a grant from Exxon, the quartet championed works of contemporary Asian composers. As part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the quartet was chosen to perform at Government House for Hong Kong’s last governor, Christopher Patten, and for the American Consul General. The quartet was the subject of feature articles in several publications, including the South China Morning Post, Ming Pao Weekly, and Hong Kong Elle. Closer to home, she has made several tours of Northeast Oklahoma with the Amici String Quartet. Last spring in New York, she gave premieres of five works for string quartet and voices. She was also presented by the Orchestra of St Luke’s in a quartet concert at the Chelsea Museum of the Arts. Laura resides in New York City with her husband Philip Wu and their daughter Jenna. In her spare time she loves to bake, bike, and hike the red-rock canyons of the Southwest.
