Adria Benjamin

Adria Benjamin, a Brooklyn, NY native, began her viola studies through a program offered by the city's public schools. She currently resides in New York and is a member of many of the city’s outstanding orchestras including the American Symphony Orchestra, Stamford Symphony Orchestra, New York Pops, Amici New York, Solisti New York and Eos. Adria has performed as a recitalist on National Public Radio, and participated in numerous orchestra and chamber music recordings, documentaries, and commercial and film score recordings. She was invited to perform as a viola soloist on the opening concert of the 92nd Street Y 2005 concert season and has performed at the White House. Adria performs annually at the Bard Festival and the OK Mozart International Festival. In addition to performing, she has been a part of the planning and creative teams for many concerts benefiting a wide range of nonprofit organizations. Adria has been a member of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and the Jerusalem String Ensemble. Her teachers include Mary Jane Metcalfe, Francis Tursi (Eastman School of Music), Karen Tuttle and Joey Corpus. While pursuing a Masters Degree at the Peabody Conservatory, Adria served as Karen Tuttle's teaching assistant and was awarded the Peabody Prize for Outstanding Viola Performance. Her conducting studies were with Gustav Meier and Robert DeCormier. Adria is a faculty member of the Mannes College Music Preparatory Division where she teaches viola, chamber music, and performance masterclasses. She also conducts three Preparatory Division orchestra and serves as the chairperson of the String Department. She is a frequent guest conductor, string clinician and competition judge in the New York area and is a Founding Member of the New York Viola Society.
