In high school Ben Herman had no intention of becoming a professional musician, but after an audition at the High School of the Performing Arts and a job at Radio City Music Hall he has gone on to do most every musical job in New York: from recording jingles, to playing Broadway, to performing as a substitute principal with the New York Philharmonic. After being fortunate enough to be invited to teach at the Aspen Music Festival, he has now been on the faculty for 33 years. Ben’s upcoming season includes playing in the pit for the hit Broadway musical “The Producers”, subbing at the New York Philharmonic, and principal chairs at the American Composers Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra of New York, and Westchester Philharmonic. Ben has appeared on countless recordings, including several New York Philharmonic releases. His most recent recording, an album of duets by Tony Bennett, has just been released. Outside of music, Ben focuses on two passions: athletics and collecting. He loves antiques, folk art and old toys, such as his vintage fire engines and trucks from the early 1900’s, as well as scooters, tricycles, and cap guns. Ben Herman lives in Manhattan with his wife Una and a rescued Great Dane named Oreo, with whom he in Central Park.
