The Roger Nierenberg Commendation Awards

Since 1991, the Stamford Symphony has presented annual awards to outstanding eighth-grade music students residing in and attending school in Fairfield County. The awards are named for Maestro Roger Nierenberg, the Stamford Symphony’s Music Director from 1980 to 2004 and a champion of music education. The Commendation Awards, which are designed to encourage young musicians to pursue the enjoyment that music can bring them throughout their lives, recognize past and present participation in musical activities and growth in repertoire.

During the fall of each year, the Stamford Symphony asks middle school teachers, as well as private instrument and voice teachers, to nominate confidentially their most deserving students. Entries are evaluated by the Stamford Symphony’s Awards Committee and by the Orchestra’s Music Director.  The receipt deadline for nominations is December 1.

Winners receive a $50 cash award, a certificate of commendation, and free tickets to a Stamford Symphony concert.

Award winners are recognized publicly at an awards ceremony during the Stamford Symphony’s Sunday Orchestra Classics concert each January at the Palace Theatre.

To nominate a Commendation Award candidate, download a Commendation nomination form, or contact the Stamford Symphony’s Education Department.
