Local children win Stamford Symphony costume contest
The brother and sister team of Makena and Nicholas Davi of Ridgefield took top prizes at the Stamford Symphony's costume contest at Stamford's Palace Theatre. Children were invited to come to the "Themes & Screams" concert dressed as their favorite character from a movie scored by composer John Williams.
Makena Davi, age 7, won the age 7-12 category with her Princess Leia costume. Her hair was coiffed in the iconic style made famous in the first Star Wars film. Makena is a first-grader at Farmingville Elementary School.
Nicholas Davi, age 4, took the 6-and-under category with his junior Indiana Jones complete with adventure hat and whip. Their prizes include passes to visit the Maritime Aquarium and the Stepping Stones Museum for Children.
The contest was judged by members of the Connecticut Garrison of the 501st Battalion (a Star Wars costuming organization) and by Jean Carucci, former Education Manager of the Stamford Symphony. The judges were surprised to learn that the two winners were brother and sister. Since the children fell into two different age categories they had appeared onstage separately. The Davi family's top prizes were a tribute to the extra work involved in creating homemade costumes. The children's parents are John and Alyssa Davi of Ridgefield.
Over 250 children were part of the audience at the Stamford Symphony's Sunday performance of "Themes & Screams". The Symphony's Kids Come Free program provides over 1,000 tickets per season for local children to attend Sunday afternoon concerts. Subscriptions for the 2010-2011 season are now on sale and parents can request free subscriptions for their children age 18 and younger. Call 203.325.1407 x10 for details.
